Use the hashtagUntil some years, I had the solid idea that everything from Japan was gold: the culture, the food, and, of course, the animated productions. This was mainly because the anime is the genre that has inspired me the most at the time of making art. However, thank to a video of the now loathed Nostalgia Critic, I realized that this wasn’t the true, in the slightest. Maybe Japan has brought many masterpieces to the Animation Field, however, not every anime film is Studio Ghibli, and not every anime is “Dragonball Z”.

Speaking of the video of the Nostalgia Critic, it was about the review of this peculiar anime movie, which gave us this character. For this Sunday:Princess Camille, from “Little Nemo”, a commission for my great fan, and friendBelieve me I have never heard of the “Little Nemo” franchise until the review of Doug, and I really didn’t know anything else until the tribute of John Rozanksi:“Little Nemo” started as comic strip series created by the American cartoonist Winsor McCay, first published in the New York Herald on October 15, 1905.

The main premise was about a little kid who had so many adventures on his dreasm, with the gimmick of they being always interrupted in the final panel, where he woke up. Until this day, this work is highly praised, and it’s considered the Magnus opus of Winsor.

A big feature about them was about, even being a weekly publication, how detailed and magnificent was the design, and its great use of colors and shapes, without forgetting all the creativity put in there.Being such a successful comic strip, it was normal it will later get adaptations, like in theater plays, films, operas, postcards, and, yes, an anime film.Being actually a Japanese-American production, this film didn’t end up only getting mixed reviews, but also being a box-office bomb. Easy, for two main reasons: one, because the people in charge didn’t know what they were doing, and two, because nobody wanted to work in it because of the former.

You see. This all started because of Yutaka Fujioka, who wanted, for a long while, to make an animated film of this famous comic strip, with the help of Tokyo Movie Sinsha Studio. First, he went to Monterey, California, to get the rights from the living relatives of Winsor McCay. Then, he looked for people to help in the project. First, he tried it with George Lucas himself for the production, but he wasn’t convinced of the story. After that, he contacted Chuck Jones, but it was a no again. After the film was finally greenlighted, it was now the mission to look for the best talent around the world.

Some got in, but others, like Gary Kurtz, quitted later. At one point, they had both Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata working in this project, but both of them stepped down later for creative differences; even Miyazaki quoted that working in this film was “one of the worst experiences he has been trhough”. When the living God of anime says that about your movie, the only good thing you have left is to find a place to bury your head.Oh, a funny story: the production could get Brad Bird and Jerry Rees for the American Animation Department. However, they quit quickly after realizing how bad was the work schedule. You see:First, they went with the animators to ask them about their work, and they say: “We are illustrating what Ray Bradbury is writing”. Then, they went with Bradbury, and he told them: “I’m writing what the artists are drawing”.

Yeah, look, I know this was a fantasy film, however, no matter the genre, the production of a film is never a fucking joke. The production was so clumsy and without almost no seriousness that real work was accomplished until 1988, and the film was finally put in theaters in Japan the next year, and on United States on 1992. However, sadly, the film ended being a flop in both countires, in Japan specially because it was at the same time as “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, of Hayao Miyazaki. Ha: irony!OK, so, the background of this movie was complete shit, but, what do I think about the film myself? Never watched it, except for the Nostalgia Critic Review. So, let’s talk about Princess Camille. For what I could read, I don’t know if she was in the original comic strips, so, let’s focus on her role in the film.Being the dream avatar of the circus owner’s daughter, she is the Princess of Slumberland, and so, the daughter of King Morpheus. Having as fisrt mission to play with her, Nemo spends some time having fun with her on this magical land, until he pretty much fucks up his other mission and releases the Nightmare King during the coronation. So, Nemo, the Professor Genius, Flip and her go in a quest to stop the evil demon.I really can’t say anymore about her, so, Princess Camille is a Toy Girl now.Because all the main concept of “Little Nemo”, I wanted to go the most fantastical as possible in this scene. So, I drew Princess Camille laying on a yellow cloud, while bubbles float around, all in front of a girly magical rainbow.Drawing the character was a lot of fun, seeing how pretty she was.Well, if “Little Nemo” taught us something, it is that, no matter if it’s a billons yen flick, or just some cookies, you need to be disciplined in the making, elaborate a solid schedule, and be as serious as possible.
